A saltwater lantern is a very practical emergency light that can still work in extremely cold environments, including snowfields and high mountains. It does not need traditional batteries or charging. You just insert the metal plate, pour in water mixed with salt, close the cap, and turn it on.
For cold regions, you can collect snow or ice, let it melt inside your tent or jacket, then add some salt to make saltwater. This saltwater becomes the “fuel” that activates the internal metal–air system and powers the LED light. As long as the liquid does not completely freeze, the lantern can keep working for many hours.
In real emergencies, you can also use rainwater, river water, beverages, or even urine with salt when there is no clean water. This makes the saltwater lantern very suitable for winter camping, snow hiking, power outages during blizzards, and any extreme cold situation where normal batteries lose power quickly.
